Complex, non-healing problem wounds
These types of wounds are characterised by
multiple factors that are inhibiting the healing process. Typically these
wounds may be ulcers or sores. If not treated properly they can lead to
serious disability, loss of quality of life and in extreme cases gangrene
or amputation of a limb.
London Wound Healing Centre has extensive experience in successfully treating
non-healing hypoxic wounds using Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. Wounds are
assessed using TcPO2 monitoring prior to treatment, to ensure oxygen levels
of the wound will rise under Hyperbaric conditions. It has been shown
that high tissue oxygen levels promote wound healing by improving collagen
formation and promoting new capillary formation. Hyperbaric oxygen also
increases the oxygen concentration in infected tissues, including bone,
and kills or inhibits the growth of organisms, which prefer low oxygen
concentrations.

The essential components of
healing
Healing is a complex process. All wounds must receive an adequate supply
of both blood and oxygen to heal. The body’s immune system must
be intact and good nutrition is required. Many diseases or disorders can
inhibit these factors and hence prevent wound healing.
We aim to find out just why the wound is failing to heal.
A full and thorough assessment of a poorly healing wound is the key to
successful treatment. Particular attention will be given to identifying
and treating the root factors that may contribute to the wound’s
inability to heal, such as poor nutrition, medications and underlying
medical conditions. We will integrate the results of our special investigations,
with the information already available from your General Practitioner
and Consultant to formulate an appropriate care plan.
