The printer does not have "physical" reset buttons but instead you use the printer "menu" settings when it.TAMPA -- A Tampa Bay Lightning assistant coach was promoted to Tampa Bay's new head coach as the team fired John Tortorella on Tuesday.

Bill Peters was promoted to replace Tortorella on an interim basis.

"Bill is very deserving," Lightning vice president and general manager Steve Yzerman said. "He has the ability to turn the ice over to a pretty good effort team.... Bill took a team last year that hadn't been good at all and got them to 50 points and making the playoffs."

Yzerman said he wasn't able to speak to Peters on Tuesday because of the NHL's trade deadline and that he would confer with owner Jeff Vinik about what the plan is moving forward. Yzerman and Vinik have already spoken.

"I think a change is going to help us down the road. I feel strongly about that," Yzerman said. "There are going to be people who agree with that and people who don't. I feel strongly about it. Not only Bill but Bill's staff and everyone on the organization's staff. I feel very strongly."

The Lightning said Tortorella was fired on Monday for a variety of reasons -- including disruptive coaching tactics and his treatment of assistant coach Rick Bowness -- and Yzerman said the coach handled the situation poorly.

"We wanted to give him a chance to figure out things within the NHL," Yzerman said. "He didn't handle it very well. We have a lot of confidence that he'll handle it well."

Yzerman said he has spoken to Peters for the past four weeks and is optimistic the new coach will put his stamp on the franchise.

Peters was an assistant for the Lightning in 2015-16 before serving as head coach of the AHL's Syracuse Crunch. His first coaching job was with the University of Minnesota in 2004.
