Because filmmakers want to give the appearance that the film is in it's original aspect ratio, even though it is in fact not, there are some exceptions to the open matte process. With films such as Blade Runner (1982), Return of the Jedi (1983), The Empire Strikes Back (1980), and Star Wars (1977), to name a few, filmmakers chose to create a pan and scan version of the film to give it the appearance that it was in it's original aspect ratio in order to match the intended theatrical release poster or theatrical film poster. In addition to the exceptions, filmmakers also sometimes create a more realistic and high-quality theatrical poster by using the open matte process, especially with highly enlarged stock imagery used in a poster. For example, a poster for the 1997 film Reservoir Dogs was produced in the company and style of artwork used for a New York Times advertisement. The poster was a mixture of enlarged and pan and scan items to give it a very realistic and intricate look.

While the film Avatar (2009) was shot in 2.39:1 in its original aspect ratio, it used the pan and scan process for the HD television broadcast. The same Willy Wonka (1971) and The Black Hole (1979) posters, which also use enlarged stock photography, were featured on the HD DVD commercial for the movie.
