* Connected Realms. In a connected realm, if you get a bunch of counties or duchies, your relationship penalty is based on the size of the entire realm, not just the number of holdings. This was causing a lot of problems. A mean of getting counties or duchies shouldn't really be too difficult, if you spend time on it, and it should be a bit more consistent. It also removes the penalty for holding more than 2 duchies. If you have 4 counties, you're not punished as much as if you had 3 counties and 1 duchy.
What does this mean for you, player?* Alliances and vassals have much better chances of survival. The demesne limit makes you not care that much about how much land you have.* Your capital has more of a chance of surviving.* You can conquer more lands.* If you win a war, you can take more lands.* If you lose a war, take it slower to reduce the relationship penalties.* You can do more with your lands, even if you are at your demesne limit. Conquering gives you more land, and so on.* You can take on more plans at once without penalty.* You can tell what your vassals are after, and better figure out what your needs are.
* Thinking about inheritance. If you're at the demesne limit, are you really able to conquer?* In the case of high tax, how do you figure out how much you can get while still being able to afford to tax?* The -1 opinion penalty for vassals is pretty harsh. Removing the vassals from your realm, or splitting them up so there are 3+ vassals makes it a lot more bearable. Especially with election, which scales with opinion and decreases the penalty. It's still a penalty, but it's not as harsh as the -50-100 relationship penalty when you've conquered.
* The king can take on the Crown Authority of a neighbouring dynasty, and gain the duchies of that dynasty, provided the kingdom is unstable. The crown authority increase is 6, and the stability goes down by 6.
As for Tolerance, that can be used to lower your demesne limit, and thus reduce your demesne size. However, you're not supposed to use that to raise your demesne size, because we don't want you to become a massive suckling pig. You should only use it to keep the peace, so that you don't have to fight wars constantly, or lose good vassals to attacks by the other side. Also, using Tolerance to raise your demesne size will make you lose your crown authority and thus any opinion bonuses your other vassals have.
Solution 5: Unstable kingdoms I implemented a modifier that reduces your demesne size, and the chance of dynastic wars, when the kingdom is unstable. It's a bit of a pain to deal with, but it's probably the least bad solution for you. I think any of the other solutions are better than a stable kingdom.
