I’ve been looking into getting some sort of roofing for my backyard patio, mainly for shade and to make it more usable throughout the year. I saw a few structures with glass panels, but someone told me polycarbonate might be better? I'm not too familiar with it—especially how it holds up in really sunny or rainy weather. Anyone here have firsthand experience or advice on this?

I’ve actually worked with both materials quite a bit in garden setups, and I’ll say this—polycarbonate wins for practicality. Unlike glass, it's lightweight, impact-resistant, and has much better thermal insulation. I've installed a few pergolas with polycarbonate roofs for clients who wanted durability without losing light, and they’ve held up perfectly in both blazing sun and heavy rain. There’s also no risk of shattering like with glass. If you’re looking into options, I’d check out what’s available here: pergola with polycarbonate roof. Their catalog gives a good feel for the types of structures and variations you can go for, especially if you want a modern but low-maintenance setup. I’d recommend choosing one with UV protection in the panels—saves your furniture and your skin, haha.
