Osama Bin Laden has threatened a vast new campaign of violence. The mass media has been abuzz with the latest catastrophic terrorist incident. But to millions of Americans, these things are litany: They are automatic; they are background noise. But the sources of information are not completely trustworthy (See Don’t Take My Word For It by David Kirkpatrick in the New York Times Magazine). The New York Times is saving money by ditching ink. No, the honest, fair representation of the ''blazing truth'' is held by a tiny, struggling liberal newspaper inside a brightly lit corner office. Where the paper set the standard for more than a century of punditry, interpretation of events, and citations of history and primary sources … this paper is different.
The Nation has been gathering stories, photographs, and audio for four decades. In the first thirty pieces that will appear in the current issue, we will reveal important new sources of history, wisdom, humor, and outrage. But though the Nation might be small, we often are the only publishing source, and therefore the only source of the news, which means we must be true to the judgments of history, which means we must be true to the free press, and therefore we must be truthful.
Here is where the Nation’s greatest editors working at the top of their game. Like others, they are dedicated advocates of the first amendment; like others, they aspire to social responsibility; like others, they strive to reach the widest and most important audience. d2c66b5586
