The video/quicktime MIME type is the fundamental type for the QuickTime media container. It's worth noting that QuickTime (the media framework on Mac operating systems) supports a wide variety of containers and codecs, so it actually supports many other MIME types. Again, CCCP fully supports DVD Playback out of the box. The simplest free method to enable DVD Playback support is to just use CCCP. Once installed go into FFDShow Video Decoder configuration which can be found in 'All Programs' from the Windows Start Menu and then in the codecs list find MPEG2 and make sure it's set to libmpeg2 or libavcodec (Experiment with both for the best results. Some machines prefer one or the other). Also tick the DVD decoding box. Failure to do these things will cause DVD Decoding to fail.

Once you've done that open CCCP, go to 'Advanced Options' and click 'Configure Codecs' from the File menu. You should see 'QuickTime Video Decoder' and 'Video Encoder' listed in the 'Video Settings' section. Tick the settings for those lines. There is no need to switch the default player to QuickTime.
Also note that you can use other video formats/codecs other than QuickTime if you prefer. As an example I like to have 'video/x-msvideo' selected as the default for the Encoder as it also supports.mov files which most people are likely to have installed on their computer.
Once you have VLC installed, enable QuickTime for Plugins, VLC > Tools > Plugins > Open Network Streams..., go to the file that you want to play, and it should load. You can also download new plugins from the plugins website. More info is at http://www.videolan.org/vlc/features-plugin.html
