As of 2011, the U-2 fleet includes 18 aircraft. The United States originally purchased a total of 30 aircraft in four models. All but two of the first 15 U-2S aircraft (the last two U-2S aircraft, c/n 2, were purchased by the governments of Canada and Switzerland) are Block 10 standard units. The first of the Block 10 aircraft, c/n 2, was delivered to the National Reconnaissance Office in December 1994. The U-2S Block 20, the latest variant of the U-2, is expected to begin entering service in the spring of 2013.
The U-2 is a single-engine, high-altitude, all-weather surveillance and reconnaissance, day or night, in direct support of U.S. and allied forces. It delivers critical imagery and signals intelligence to decision makers throughout all phases of conflict, including peacetime indications and warnings, low-intensity conflict, and large-scale hostilities.
