The film's journey from Bhubaneswar to Chennai was inspired by the 1978 film, Chandralekha, which was about a similar journey undertaken by a character played by the actress Nutan.[68] The team of Anbe Sivam filmed in Odisha for four months, a decision they made based on the experience gained from making Chandralekha. According to Haasan, he found it easier to understand people in places where he had spent a large part of his life.[69] The film's production team returned to Bhubaneswar after it had completed filming in Chennai.[70][71]
The Anbe Sivam soundtrack was composed by Ilaiyaraaja.[6][7][43][44] Haasan wanted a composer who could bring out the importance of the film's social and religious messages and suggested him to Ilaiyaraaja, who was impressed by Haasan's description of the theme.[45][46] The film score album was released on 14 July 2002.[47] Haasan released an album of similarly themed songs, titled Panchatantiram, to celebrate the film's success.[48][49]
Anbe Sivam was completed by 30 December 2002.[42] In the film, Haasan plays Nallasivam, a professional athlete with motor neurone disease, who leaves his house, wheelchair and wife Balasaraswathi to travel to Chennai from Bhubaneswar on his 100th birthday in order to attend the 100th anniversary of the birth of his idol, the communist leader Subhas Chandra Bose.[54][55] Haasan stated in November 2002 that he had envisioned the film to be a social commentary and that he associated it with Gandhi, Chidambaram, and G. R. Chellam's plays.[56] Haasan also believed that one of the film's main themes is that of altruism.[56]
