From a distance, I was alarmed to see that a new flight desk had been installed in the room - I knew Reno was getting a new airport within about 100 yards, but this place was right around the corner from the old Municipal airport property and though the new airport was under construction, the dock was visible from the street and from the front of the stage - at the very least it would have looked strange to have a new building with a desk where there was nothing for the flight desk rep and it adds quite a bit of added weight to the complex. Fortunately they didn't put the flight desk against the wall of the room, so it didn't look too out of place, and it blended in pretty well.
But the most important piece of equipment in a room that seats about 350 interested participants is the AV equipment and sure enough the vendor who sold us our large screen, 3D projector, and sound system weighed it down with a tank of helium before the event and assured us there was no problem with having a console that could support hydraulic pressure of up to 6,000 PSI, raised from the floor. (No, the claims weren't all idle, our AV equipment was a couple of thousand pounds and the old monitor under the conference table wasn't made for a room like the White River Amphitheatre, but his solution was to have the monitor on an extension, below the table on a universal arm that had some sort of universal joint in it. If a hydraulic failure had occurred, there'd be no chance of the monitor crashing across the room.)
As we'd hoped, the room started with a number of people standing near the front of the stage area, presumably prepared to leave the room as soon as the lecture started so they didn't have to worry about pressed clothes, and scout for seats, but when the main door opened and a bunch of people walked in, everyone took their familiar spots around the room.
And I sat down, thinking that my job was going to be easy - I'd just have to keep this person talking to show everyone the screen by remote control from the stage, and I'd have my assistant on stage who'd be around to help out if something happened. d2c66b5586
