As Hurricane Sandy bore down on the East Coast and President-elect Donald Trump told reporters he'd soon appoint a person to take over his transition effort, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was the first big-name politician to applaud the president-elect's decision.
In a surprising move, Christie said he would be voting for Trump in November and that he hoped to be on the team that leads the transition to run the federal government.
"I would have loved to have been on the transition team. I love this president, I think he's a transformational president for America, and I've been one of his staunchest supporters," Christie said Monday afternoon in Washington at a National Governors Association event.
"But I am a Republican, and I voted for Donald Trump, and I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt here, and I will support him as best I can," he continued.
"I really think that Donald Trump understands the breadth of America as well as anyone can understand it."
Christie's endorsement became public just a few days after he told MSNBC's Chris Matthews that "there's a lot of things about the last eight months that I wish I hadn't seen, and I'm really glad that I haven't seen them." He also threw a pointed barb at Trump's "New York values" in response to an earlier Trump interview in which he defended his sometimes-outspoken remarks by saying "New York values" were "catholic values."
After Trump's election, Christie became one of the most visible of Trump's allies and the president-elect granted Christie the kind of early pardon it appeared he couldn't easily get under any other circumstances: power.
Upon Trump's announcement of his pick for vice president, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, Christie abruptly left the table where he'd been sitting to greet Pence and walked back to the television cameras to talk about how proud he was to be known as Trump's friend.
