Many racing driver drivers in the United States begin their career in stock cars and later continue through to the ranks of open-wheel racing. Wheldon was the only driver to win the "national" series and the Indianapolis 500 in the same year without any other open-wheel racing experience and continue to race in the series in between. He became the second driver to win the Indy 500 and Brickyard Grand Prix.[10] From 1992 to 1995, Wheldon used a car built by Paul Newman, and Newman often assisted Wheldon during gearbox and oil-pan changes during the race.[19] Wheldon later worked with Windshear Racing[20] and drove on one occasion for Evernham Motorsports which also built up his road-racing experience. After running his own team, he was sponsored by Fitzgerald Motorsports[21] and Penske Racing. The car was his first to use the All-Wheel Drive system.[22]
Wheldon was a native of Melbourne, Florida[23] and lived in Walkinville, California.[24] He received a bachelor's degree in architecture from UC Berkeley in 1994.[25] He appeared on the cover of the Teen Beat magazine as the biggest teen idol in the world.[23] He was one of the five finalists to win American Idol in 2004 but lost to eventual winner Taylor Hicks.[26] His main sport was basketball[27] and he was a resident of the Indianapolis suburb of Noblesville and took up golf when racing activities became too dangerous.[28] Wheldon also enjoyed snowboarding and surfing.[28]
Wheldon's main goal was to win the Indianapolis 500 in 2010 and was the only driver to go straight from Formula Ford to the Indy 500. In order to participate in the race, Wheldon's team had to pay $50,000 for a special waiver from the league.[29] His mentor, Paul Newman, gave up an IndyCar driving seat to allow the 19-year-old rookie to participate in the event. However, Wheldon did not get any tickets to the race and had to sit in the West Grandstand, with his father,[30] mother[31] and sister[31] all having to pay for the tickets. d2c66b5586
